Excellent Advice...
For Each and Everyone of Us

May 24, 2010

Lisa Disbrow, a young successful entrepreneur and mother of two from North Carolina was featured in a recent issue of Inc. Magazine.  The article provides detail regarding Lisa’s struggle to balance her personal and professional life, including time and focus on her successful clothing boutiques, given her unfortunate diagnosis, treatment and the increasingly devastating impact of multiple sclerosis.

Lisa’s doctors, as well as other experts have encouraged her to dial back... to reduce the stress in her life.  Unfortunately, stress can cause more frequent flare-ups of MS, during which symptoms intensify and can put Lisa out of commission for days or weeks at a time... not to mention the impact of prescribed drugs on her immune system.

Problem is... Lisa absolutely loves what she does for a living.  She loves working in her stores, selling upscale, hip clothes and she loves expanding her stores and expanding her business.  For Lisa, who has good insurance coverage and does not have to work, significant stress comes from not working and not doing what she loves!

The experts suggest the following:

  • Work hard, but not too hard.  Lisa must be mindful of not getting too rundown.  Otherwise, Lisa and everyone around her, including her family, health and business will suffer.
  • To grow, learn to delegate.  If Lisa hopes to grow her business, she must recruit, train, trust and delegate with excellence.
  • Keep doing what you enjoy.  Work, if you love what you do, can provide very healthy and timely distractions from unfortunate and even devastating realities of life.

So what about you?  I hope and pray that you do not have MS or any other devastating or life-threatening disease.  However, the reality is that we all struggle with balance in our lives... particularly those of us who have great ambition and love what we do.

Seems to me the advice for Lisa is excellent advice for each and every one of us!

  • Work hard, but not too hard.
  • To grow, learn to delegate.
  • Keep doing what you enjoy.

Excellent advice for all of us!  And now... it’s up to you!
